Herkenrode Abbey & Tiendschuur: A Historic Treasure and beacon of female entrepreneurship near Hasselt, Belgium
From its establishment in the late 12th century, the Herkenrode Abbey has been a haven for entrepreneurial, religious women. It was one of the first, above all, wealthiest woman’s abbeys in the Low Countries.

Herkenrode means ‘open place along the water’: the Cistercian nuns realized here in the valley of the river Demer a smart water management system, which was the key to success transforming the abbey into a thriving enterprise. It became a popular destination for pilgrims and a formidable economic force with vast estates, with a total of 3.100 ha, art pieces and big gardens.

The French Revolution brought an abrupt end to the six centuries of growth and religious power. Some of the oldest parts of the site were destroyed by fire and decay. The Tiendschuur (Tithe Barn) is a historic barn located within the core of the Herkenrode Abbey site. It was built in 1656 under Abbess Anna Catharina de Lamboy and was originally used to store one tenth of annual agricultural produce or earnings, known as tithes, which farmers paid as tax for the support of the abbey.

Today, after careful restoration and preservation, the Herkenrode Abbey site has been transformed into an attractive place of stillness along the water where heritage, culture and nature can be experienced in coherence.
